Dog training stimulates your dog mentally and helps channel his energy in the right direction.

Gratefully, there are many dog tricks you can teach your pet.

Dog Tricks #1 – Respond To The Clicker

This trick is very vital in dog training. It is used to reinforce good behaviour.

You will need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • When your dog does something you like, click and give him a treat
  • Repeat on about 30 consecutive occasions

The goal is for your dog to associate the clicker with treats.

Pro tip: Never click without treating and never treat without clicking.

Dog Tricks #2 – Respond To Its Name

Another dog trick you can teach your dog is to respond to its name.

You will need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Pay no attention to your dog until he looks at you. Then click and treat.
  • Keep doing this and after a while, call your dog’s name before you click and treat.
  • The next time your dog looks away, call his name. Then click and treat him if he looks at you.
  • Repeat this every other day until your dog gets used to looking at you when you call his name.

Pro tip: End the training before your dog gets tired. You will make more progress when your dog is excited.

Dog Tricks #3 – Touch

This trick is all about training your dog to touch.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Touch-stick

How to:

  • Hold your touch-stick some distance from you and wait.
  • Curiosity will get the best of your dog. When he touches the stick with his nose or mouth, click and treat.
  • Otherwise, gently tap his nose and click.
  • Continue holding the stick out until he touches it without hesitation. Then add the command ‘touch’
  • When he can touch the stick on command, praise him and offer him a treat.

Pro tip: Cover the tip of the stick to prevent injuries.

Dog Tricks #4 – Sit

Teaching your dog to sit is training that will come in handy when you have visitors.

You will need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Wait for your dog to sit on his own
  • Click and treat.
  • He will try other actions to get the treat like lying down but ignore him.
  • As often as he sits, click and treat him.
  • Then add the ‘sit’ command.
  • As he responds to the command, click and treat.

Dog Tricks #5 – Lay Down

You will need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • This trick requires similar steps as the previous.
  • Wait for him to lay down, click and treat.
  • Watch for when he will lay down again and reward him.
  • As he repeats the action, add the command, ‘Down’ when you click.
  • Now, treat only when he responds to the command

Pro tip: this trick is more feasible in a small room because your dog will lay down faster.

Dog Tricks #6 – Stand

Standing is normal for dogs so, he may not understand quickly what you want him to do in this trick.

You will need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Get your dog to sit or lay down.
  • When he stands, click and treat
  • Repeat until he attaches the action with a treat.
  • Add a signal of raising your hand and adding the command ‘stand’
  • Reward him as he responds accordingly.

Dog Tricks #7 – Release

You need this training to let your dog know when it is okay to move around or play.

You will need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Decide on a hand motion and vocal command you’ll use like throwing a ball and saying, ‘go’
  • Command your dog to sit
  • After a while, give the command to release using your chosen signs
  • Act excited so your dog will be motivated to go
  • As he obeys, click and treat.
  • Repeat several times till your dog gets used to it.
  • Gradually cut down your enthusiasm and extend the wait time before issuing the command
  • Praise your dog as he responds accordingly.

Here’s a life-saving trick. It will be very useful when your dog is off the leash.

Also, it will be great if you practice it every day.

You will need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Meet your dog where he is, click and treat after issuing the command e.g. ‘here Chucky or come Chucky’
  • Do it repeatedly then go across the room and repeat the command

He will come for his treat. Click and reward him.

You can also pet his head and loop your hand under his collar before offering the treat.

It will help your dog associate the command with bond time with you.

  • Call him from different rooms and reward him when he comes.
  • Lastly, try calling him when his attention is on something different.

Pro tip: involve your family in the exercise. Let each person call him differently. Only reward when he goes to the person who called him.

Dog Tricks #9 – Stay

Here’s another training that will keep your dog out of the way of your visitors or out of your dining table (LOL).

You will need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Command your dog to sit. Click and treat.
  • Say ‘stay.’ Wait 8 seconds and say ‘release’ or ‘go’. Then click and treat.
  • Do this five times per session – sit, stay, release.
  • Try it at different times daily. Build up to several minutes before releasing.

Dog Tricks #10 – Heel

This is a fascinating trick that every well-behaved dog should know. I mean, who wouldn’t love their dog to be following them by the heel?

You will need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Place your dog on a leash attached to your belt on the left side
  • Don’t go in your dog’s direction if he pulls on the leash
  • Then he will come toward you. If he reaches your left leg with his shoulder, click and treat.
  • Start walking and as your dog follows, issue the command e.g. “Let’s go” and “With me”
  • You want him to associate those words with being by your side.
  • With every 10 ten steps that your dog remains on your left side, click and treat.
  • Practice for 10 to 15-minute sessions about four times daily until your dog masters the trick.
  • After a while, give the commands without the leash. Praise and reward your dog as he complies.

Pro tip: Practice the trick in an enclosed area first before heading outside.

Dog Tricks #11 – Roll Over

This is one trick your dog must not miss. Don’t be surprised when a visitor requests that your dog rollover.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Tell your dog to lay down.
  • Entice him with a treat to move over to one hip and on his side. Click and treat.
  • Next, use the treat to get him to go over on his back. Click and treat.
  • Keep using the treat to get him to roll all the way over. Reward him accordingly.
  • Repeat several times and remove the lure at some point.
  • As he gets better at it, add the command, “Rollover.” Click and treat when he performs well.

Pro tip: Try the exercise on a sloped surface to make it easier for your dog.

Dod Tricks #12 – Fetch A Drink

Those moments when you’re watching the Tv and feel thirsty but you’re too lazy to go fetch a drink, your dog is more than willing to help. But first, you have to teach him how.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Soda Bottle

How to:

  • Considering your dog’s size, place an appropriate Soda Bottle on the ground.
  • Command your dog to take it. Click and treat when he does.
  • Repeat several times.
  • Next, tell him to ‘bring it’ then tell him to ‘drop it’ when he brings it.
  • Do this repeatedly and click/treat accordingly.
  • Change the position of the bottle to a farther spot each time.
  • Only click and treat if your dog takes it, brings it, and drops it into your hands.
  • After a while, eliminate the three commands and use the phrase, “Bring me a drink!”
  • Try the exercise from different spots in the room, and then move to different rooms.

Pro tip: train your dog to first knock the bottle over to make it easy to pick up.

Dog Tricks #13 – Bring A Tissue

This trick aims to train your dog to pull out a single tissue, bring it to you, and then dispose of it.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Box of Tissues
  • Wastebasket

How to:

  • Keep a tissue box on the ground.
  • Command your dog to “Take It.” He may want to take the whole box. Wait till he takes only one tissue and pulls it out, then click and treat.
  • Repeat until he can pull it out without hesitation.
  • Next, instruct him to “Bring it” to you and “Drop it” in your hand. Click and treat when he complies.
  • Continue to do this until he does all three commands smoothly.
  • After a while, use “Bring Me a Tissue” as the command when he drops it in your hand.
  • Now, it’s time to teach him to throw the tissue away.
  • Get a wastebasket. Return the tissue to the dog and have him “Bring it” to the wastebasket, and “Drop it” in. Click and treat.
  • Repeat until he takes it, brings it, and drops it without stress.
  • Next, use the command “Throw it away” while he is dropping it in.
  • Keep practising the command “Throw it away” until he gets used to it.

Dog Tricks #14 – Turn A Lightswitch On and Off

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Laser Pointer

How to:

Part I – Turn On A Light

  • Use a laser pointer to endear your dog to jump up and touch the light switch.
  • Ensure that he jumps up with his pads on the wall and not his claws.
  • Let him touch the switch with his nose.
  • Click and treat only when his nose turns the light on.

Part II – Turn The Light Off

  • Like before, get your dog used to jumping up on the wall. This time, let his paw hit the light switch.
  • Click only when he successfully turns ‘off’ the light switch.
  • Moving on, click only when your dog successfully completes the trick from beginning to end.
  • That way, he’ll learn he has to perform the trick at once to be treated.

Dog Tricks #15 – Limp

This is one trick that will make you super happy when your dog masters it.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Leash

How to:

  • Connect your dog’s leash to his collar and pull up his front dominant paw.
  • Click and treat when he walks one or two steps.
  • Keep at it until your dog is successfully ‘Limping’ with the help of the leash.
  • Encourage your dog to put less weight on his lifted paw.
  • As you practice, reduce the force on the leash.
  • Soon, your dog will be able to limp on his own.
  • Don’t rush. This one will take a while.

Here’s another trick that will help your dog get to safety.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Touch-stick

How to:

  • Instruct your dog to lay down.
  • While he is still in position, draw him to move forward with the touch-stick.
  • Do it several times. When your dog begins crawling naturally, say ‘Crawl’ before you click and treat.
  • Step back from your dog and give him the command, ‘Crawl.’
  • Click and treat if he responds accordingly. Otherwise, repeat the previous steps.

You think your dog is a cutie? Wait till he plays dead.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Touch-Stick

How to:

  • Tell your dog to lay down.
  • Using the touch-stick or a treat, gently guide your dog to move into the play dead position (legs in the air, paws folded)
  • Click and treat
  • Repeat the step until your dog can stay in the position without extra help
  • Now, add the command ‘Play Dead’ as your dog repeats the process

You can also use a hand signal like you’re shooting a gun with your fingers.

  • Keep at it until he perfects it.

Pro tip: some dogs assume the ‘play dead’ position very often. If that’s your dog, clicking and treating, issuing the command whenever your dog is in that position will help reinforce the trick

Dog Tricks #18 – The Bang Performance

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Have your dog limp, crawl, and play dead. Click and treat after he performs each action.
  • Next, give him all three commands but no treating until the end. Repeat several times.
  • Now say “BANG!” before giving the three commands and while he is in his “play dead” position. Click and treat.
  • Keep doing this. Get rid of your three initial commands after a while so that he does all three tricks once he hears “BANG!”
  • Continue practising until he masters it.

Dog Tricks #19 – Go To A Place

Here’s a common trick used in movie production. You can also train your dog to go to bed or sit on the rug using this trick.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Touch-stick
  • Masking Tape

How to:

  • Tell your dog to touch. Click and treat
  • Next, place the tape on the floor and point at it with the stick.
  • Click and treat when your dog moves to the spot
  • Repeat several times
  • At some point, call the marker by its name (e.g. mark, spot, etc.) just as he steps into it. Click and treat.
  • Continue until he goes to the spot once you say the name.
  • With that, you can place the marker anywhere in the room where you want your dog to sit or lay down.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Touch-stick

How to:

  • With the aid of the touch-stick, direct your dog in a circular motion. Click and treat as he complies.
  • Repeat several times. Later, add a hand signal (circular motion with index finger).
  • When your dog can spin without the touch stick, add the command, ‘spin’.
  • Keep practising until your dog can spin at your command.

Pro tip: another excellent way to teach your dog this trick is by clicking when you find him chasing his tail.

Visitors find it adorable when they are introduced to a tiny paw-shake.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Tell your dog to sit before you
  • Help him lift his paw, click and treat. Do this 5 times.
  • Now, wait till he lifts the paw. Then click and treat
  • Repeat several times
  • Add the command, ‘paw’ as you proceed

Pro tip: You can encourage your dog to lift his paw by tickling the hollow behind his paw

#22 – Shake

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • You need to catch your dog shaking, then click and treat.

Look out for when he’s just waking from a nap, stepping into the house, after a bath, etc.

  • If he repeats the act, great. Click and treat.
  • Next time, add the command, “shake”.
  • Reward your dog whenever he responds on command.

#23 – Jump

Confirm from your vet that it is safe to teach your dog this trick before you proceed. We don’t want any broken hips (LOL)

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Touch-stick

How to:

  • Raise your touch-stick so that your dog will have to jump to touch it
  • If he succeeds in taking all legs off the floor, click and treat.
  • Repeat several times and add the command, ‘jump’ after some time.
  • Continue until your dog can jump on command without the touch-stick
  • Remember to take breaks when your dog is tired

#24 – Jump Rope

You can teach your dog this trick after he has learned to jump on command. Also, confirm from your vet that your dog can take on this exercise.

This exercise will entertain both you and your dog.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats
  • Jump rope
  • Strong table

How to:

  • Place your dog on the table and give the ‘jump’ command. Click and treat
  • Help your dog maintain the same position on the table
  • Next, place the rope on the table so that your dog will get used to seeing it under him.
  • Find a good spot and tie the Jump rope so that you can easily move the rope back and forth
  • Move the rope as your dog jumps until he gets used to it
  • Now, give the rope close to a full turn, pausing before it crosses your dog’s legs. At this point, tell him to Jump. When he does, slide the jump rope underneath.
  • Repeat several times, clicking and treating as he complies.
  • With time, the rotations will be smoother. Keep at it till your dog can do it excellently.

#25 – Sit Pretty

Having your dog sit pretty makes a loving and funny sight.

You’ll need:

  • Clicker
  • Treats

How to:

  • Come to your dog’s level with him sitting in front of you.
  • Have your dog smell a treat and then slowly raise it above him.
  • Once he lifts his paws off the ground, click and treat.
  • Whenever her hindquarters are on the floor and her front paws are up, say “sit pretty” and click/treat.
  • Do this five times for each training session.
